Can you work and still receive SSDI in Washington?

Many people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Washington wonder if they can continue working without losing benefits. The good news is that the Social Security Administration (SSA) allows limited work under certain rules.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Understanding Work and SSDI in Washington

SSDI benefits are meant for people unable to work full-time due to a disability. However, the SSA recognizes that some individuals may be able to do part-time or limited work.

This is managed under the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) rule, which sets monthly income limits.

  • In 2025, the SGA limit is $1,550 per month (or $2,590 if blind).
  • Earning more than this may disqualify you from SSDI.
  • Earning less allows you to keep benefits while working.

Trial Work Period (TWP) in Washington

The SSA offers a Trial Work Period, which lets you test your ability to work without immediately losing benefits.

  • You can work and earn more than the SGA limit for up to 9 months (not necessarily consecutive) within a 60-month period.
  • During this time, you will still receive full SSDI benefits.
  • In 2025, any month where you earn over $1,110 counts as a TWP month.

Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE)

After the Trial Work Period, you enter a 36-month Extended Period of Eligibility.

  • During this time, you can still receive SSDI for any month you earn below the SGA limit.
  • If you go over the limit, benefits may stop—but can restart if your income drops again.

Washington-Specific Work Incentives

Washington residents on SSDI may also qualify for:

  • Ticket to Work Program – Free services to help you find a job while keeping benefits safe.
  • Medicare Continuation – Even if your SSDI stops, you may keep Medicare coverage for several years.
